If you're looking for Medicare information, there are several government resources you should know about. Medicare is a United States government health insurance program. Whether you enroll in the federal Original Medicare program or a Medicare plan option from a private insurance company, the government plays a significant role in setting requirements and overseeing coverage. Several government agencies are involved with Medicare in one way or another. For example:
- Medicare is provided through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS, which itself is part of the Department of Health and Human Services, administers other health insurance programs as well, such as Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program. CMS is also involved in administering the Health Insurance Marketplace.
- The Social Security Administration (SSA generally determines eligibility for Medicare. When you apply for Medicare, you apply through Social Security (or the Railroad Retirement Board, abbreviated RRB, if that's how you receive your retirement benefits). Many individuals don't have to apply for Medicare; you're automatically enrolled at age 65 if you're already receiving SSA or RRB benefits , or if you've been receiving SSA or certain RRB disability benefits for 24 consecutive months.
